JKO Athletes Shine at USA Karate National Championships
The USA Karate National Championships and Team Trials held in Greenville, South Carolina from July 8-11 drew competitors from across the country. Building upon a competition season of tough bouts against fierce competition, students from JKO Karate in Garner earned the opportunity to compete at the event. Coach and Athlete Return From Olympic-Level Training
Garner residents take part in intensive training with US National coaches and team members. Nearly ninety athletes and coaches from all over the United States made the trip to Sewickley, PA for a long, hard weekend of Olympic-level intensive training – two of them from Garner. Ed Craft, senior instructor at JKO Karate in Garner, and his student Ford Bowden traveled to the small town outside of Pittsburgh to learn from and work with US National coaches and team members at the USA Karate Elite Training Camp. Regular Competition Season Ends on Success!

New Addition to Elite Few
JKO Karate in Garner is pleased to announce one of its members has reached a tremendous personal milestone by earning his black belt on Friday, January 29th . “Most people will never set foot in a karate club, and many of those who do will never get a black belt,” said senior instructor Ed Craft. “This is really a great achievement.”

Locals Bring Home Gold, Silver and Black
Instructors and students from JKO Karate in Garner participated in the 37th Annual JKO Masters Seminars and Championships held on January 16-17 in San Diego, California. Held at the San Diego Convention Center, this international event has drawn competitors, officials and VIPs from as far away as Italy and from organizations as notable as the World Karate Federation and USA Karate.

Olympic Level Training Comes to Garner
Coach Tommy Hood, one of the national team coaches for the USOC's National Governing Body for Karate gave an elite-level training seminar at the JKO Garner Karate club. Coach Hood covered fighting combinations, take-downs and strategy. One of the instructors at the club, Henry Norris, said "Training with a 10 time national champion is great. But when he also happens to be a coach for the national team, it's even better."

Moving on After Peak
After Peak Fitness, the local gym, closed shop and moved out in the middle of the night, many members lost their only place to exercise. It was then that Sensei Ed Craft, owner and senior instructor at the JKO Garner karate club had the idea to open the floor to former gym members. Mary Chidsey was one of the moms in the karate club and was also an instructor and personal trainer for Peak Fitness. Mary and Ed implemented a boot camp style fitness class that is offered three times per week at two different times during the day. For more information, visit the

Kids Safety Day a Success
Several families in the greater Garner area took advantage of free safety classes for their children. Held at the JKO Garner Karate club, families learned together about bully awareness and safety from Garner Police Senior Officer Troy Young. Afterwards, children participated in an Eddie Eagle Gun Safety class while parents had their own class, learning how to reinforce what their children were learning.
