JKO Garner offers classes in Muso Jikiden Eishin-Ryu Iaido. Eishin-Ryu Iaido is one of the most respected and widely practiced styles of Iaido in the world, and has an unbroken history of about 450 years.
The founder of Eishin-Ryu was Hayashizaki Jinsuke Minamoto no Shigenobu, who lived between 1546 and 1621. Muso Jikiden Eishin-Ryu was originally developed for the tachi, a slightly longer and more deeply curved predecessor of the katana. Hasegawa Chikaranosuke Eishin, from whom the style's name is derived, adapted the style to the newly developed katana.
Training uses the bokken to develop strength, wooden drawing swords for practice, an iaito for safe practice with a metal blade, and ultimately a shinken, or sharpened metal blade, for advanced practitioners.
Iaido is a very traditional, detail oriented art that requires concentration, dedication and persistence. Members of the JKO USA team travel to Japan every year to train with the current Grandmaster of the style, Hanshi Norikazu Iwata.
