Hanshi MIKI has been teaching Karate-Do in the United States for more than 40 years. He taught in Washington state, TN, and VA prior to arriving in San Diego in 1972. Some of his current students have been under his instruction since 1967.
Hanshi MIKI began his training in Shito-Ryu while a teenager in Japan.
When he came to the US in 1966, Hanshi had already earned his black belt in Shito-Ryu. After arriving in the US, he taught karate and completed his college education. Hanshi MIKI eventually affiliated with Teruo Hayashi, the founder of Hayashi-ha Shito-Ryu. It was Hayashi's desire that Hanshi begin the JKO. For the next 23 years, from 1972 until 1995, the JKO taught and promoted Hayashi-ha Shito-Ryu.
In 1995 Hanshi MIKI sought out and began to train with Soke Kenzo Mabuni, son of the founder of Shito-Ryu, Kenwa Mabuni.
Hanshi MIKI was the first person in the world (other than members of the Mabuni family) to receive 8th Degree Black Belt and to be certified as Hanshi (senior master) of Shito-Ryu Karate-Do from the authentic Shito-Ryu Nippon Karate-Do Kai (the organization of Kenwa Mabuni, founder of Shito-Ryu.)
He is the first foreign resident recipient of 7th degree Black Belt (1989) from the Federation of All Japan Karate-Do Organizations. He also passed the exam on his first attempt.
Hanshi Minobu MIKI is the recipient of a special citation in honor of his years of dedication to the development, spread and instruction of Karate-Do. Hanshi has been teaching and promoting Karate-do, both here and throughout the world, for over 40 years. This special Citation of Meritorious Service was be presented by His Excellency, the Ambassador of Japan.
